EB Hangout...on speeding up Southeast Asia's coal phase-out with transition credits

Can transition credits help Southeast Asia to meet its clean energy ambitions?
Let’s discuss.

The consensus on ending coal might be increasingly clear, but the logistics around how to retire entire fossil fuel fleets in a way that makes financial sense is not. This is particularly true in Asia: How do we retire a young coal fleet with an average plant age of only 13 years.

Our special report Killing them softly: Southeast Asia’s cautious quest to phase out its coal fleet using transition credits sheds light on the high stakes involved in trialling a novel class of transition credits to phase out two Philippine coal plants early. One of the coal facilities, energy firm ACEN’s South Luzon Thermal Energy Corp plant, is merely in its ninth year of operation and still lucrative. Hear from Philippines chief correspondent Hannah Fernandez about her visit to Puting Bato West in Batangas where the coal plant is located. Finance correspondent Gabrielle See will share more about – and answer questions on – how transition credits work.

Meet experts who are familiar with the workings of the coal phase-out pilots and discuss what needs to be done for Southeast Asia to shift to clean renewables in an inclusive and equitable way.

We will also be premiering a mini-documentary on transition credits. Be the first to watch it at the EB Hangout session!
